Initially, it was a college run by the Jesuit Fathers. It began to be erected in 1610. In 1670, the college was burned down and destroyed by Arabs from Muscat (Xeicado). It was rebuilt in 1674 and worked until 1759, date on which the Jesuit Fathers were expelled from Portugal and the colonies. It became the Palace of the General Governors from 1763 to 1898.
After National Independence it became the Museum of Colonial History. The museum features:
- The chapel of São Paulo;
- Museum of Sacred Art;
- Museum of the Navy (incorporates an exhibition on the results of the work of underwater archeology);
- Museum of decorative art.
