It was founded in the 13th century. It underwent profound changes especially in the eighteenth century, which practically gave it its present appearance. Of note is the singularity of the Chapel of the Tombs, the Cistern, the paintings of the Chapter Hall and the High Choir
Situated outside the castle walls, next to the old road that linked Beja to Mértola.
