Originally, the Sé Nova was the Church of the College of the Jesuits (College of the Eleven Thousand Virgins), that had settled in Coimbra in 1541. The church began to be constructed in 1598, following a project of the official architect of the Jesuits of Portugal, Baltazar Álvares, influenced by the church of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon. The works were very slow and the worship only began in 1640, with the temple being inaugurated only in 1698.
In 1759 the Jesuits were banished from Portugal by the Marquis of Pombal and in 1772 the episcopal see of Coimbra was transferred from the old Romanesque Cathedral to the spacious Jesuit church.
