In the place where the dinosaur footprints are today, there was a quarry, the Pedreira do Galinha; on July 4, 1994, João Carvalho, from the Torrejana Society of Speleology and Archeology, discovered the footprints that would transform the quarry into the current monument. The National Museum of Natural History creates a working group that makes two reports that serve to demonstrate to the official and scientific entities, the paleontological importance of the finding and consequent creation of the monument.
As the name implies, it is located in the Serra de Aire, near Fátima, in the municipalities of Ourém and Torres Novas and is an integral part of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, occupying an area of about 20 hectares.
The park also has an entertainment area, an Environmental Animation Center, a picnic area, a large panel illustrating the evolution of life on Earth throughout geological time and various informative panels throughout the 1000 meters of its route.
