Just 3 km from Vila Real de Santo António, this former fishing village, nestled between a vast pine forest and the sea was a pioneer in the Algarve's tourist exploration, with the construction of one of the region's first hotels in the 1960s. and beautiful beach, a mild climate and several pedestrian zones, in Portuguese sidewalk, Monte Gordo is one of the main tourist destinations of the Algarve.
Patrimony:
- Church of Our Lady of Sorrows - Ancient temple, possibly as old as the village of Monte Gordo. It has, beneath it, vestiges of another church that the sands have buried.
- Praia de Monte Gordo - The beauty of its beach, the safe and invalid waters attracted the first foreign tourists in the 60's, giving it a pioneering place in the development of Algarve tourism. Today, Monte Gordo is an international tourist center, with a casino among its many facilities.
- Forest Nursery
- Monte Gordo Casino - In 1934, it replaced the original Peninsular Casino that was within walking distance. It was subsequently refurbished several times.
- Avenue Infante D. Henrique (Pedestrian Walk) - A wide avenue promenade sealed to the traffic automobile allows quiet walks in front of the sea.
Monte Gordo also offers other leisure activities, such as the Casino, and a large number of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the Algarve's rich seafood and seafood cuisine. Of note is the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows on the second Sunday of September, accompanied by meticulously adorned fishermen's boats along the bay.
