The garden has a library with more than 125,000 volumes. The Department of Botany collaborates with the "Broterian Society" in the edition of scientific journals that offer an exchange of publications with about 700 similar libraries.
The herbarium comprises about 1 million species from all over the world. Here you will also find the "Willkomm Herbarium", where you can study other materials of botanical interest, usually from university explorations in Tropical Africa. All this material, together with the seeds of more than 2,000 species (Index Seminum), is exchanged with other national and foreign counterparts.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra was created in 1772 under the Museum of Natural History instituted by the Marquis of Pombal at the University of Coimbra.
