On 7 July 2007 he was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal.
The tombs of D. Pedro I (1320-1367), with the name Terrible or also O Just, and that of D. Inês de Castro (1320-1355), which are on each side of the transept, attach great significance and splendor to the church. The tombs belong to one of the largest tomb sculptures of the Middle Ages. When he ascended the throne, Dom Pedro I had given orders for the construction of these tombs so that his great love, D. Ines, who had been cruelly murdered by the father of Dom Pedro I, King Afonso IV (1291- 1357).
The Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça is situated in Alcobaça, Portugal.
It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and as National Monument since 1910, IPPAR.
